Prynne’s pamphlet joined a host of other vicious allegations in the same vein, among them the preposterous charge that the bestial Jews, led by Menasseh, were planning to take over St. Paul’s Cathedral and turn it into a synagogue. In undertaking now to defend Judaism against these fresh attacks, Menasseh debated an anti-Jewish theologian before a public crowd at the French embassy. But Prynne’s pamphlet especially had to be answered. To it, the rabbi who grew up speaking Portuguese, who wrote in Spanish and Latin, who studied and prayed in Hebrew, and who spoke daily in Dutch, now composed in English a full-throated vindication of his people: Vindiciae Judaeorum, Or, A Letter in Answer to Certain Questions Propounded by a Noble and Learned Gentleman: Touching the Reproaches Cast on the Nation of the Jews; Wherein All Objections are Candidly and Yet Fully Clear’d.
